One-Armed Surfing Star Bethany Hamilton on Trusting God

By Jennifer Riley|Christian Post Reporter (with permission of Faith Hunters)

Bethany Hamilton, one of the top female surfers in the world despite having only one arm, proclaims in a new video that God can change tragic events into opportunities to glorify Himself.

In an "I Am Second" video released Tuesday, Hamilton recalls how she climbed back on her surf board after only a month following her near fatal collision with a shark that bit off her left arm. By her third try, the then 13-year-old was able to ride the wave all the way back to the beach.

And just two years later, the one-armed Hamilton took first place at the NSSA (National Scholastic Surfing Association) National Championship in 2005. "From what seems like such a horrible thing, God has just brought glory to Himself," shares Hamilton, now 21, in the video. "I have been able to be just a good light to people and just share His love. I wake up every day and [try to] honor God in everything that I do and I may fall short sometimes, but all I want to do is love Him." Within a "split second" around Halloween of 2003, a shark attack left the young Hamilton without her left arm. She had lost about 60 percent of her blood after the freak accident and recalls a paramedic on the way to the hospital whispering in her ear, "God will never leave you nor forsake you."

"I didn't have time to think much," she recalls in the video. "Right away, I knew I had to get to the beach to survive this. "I just laid there and prayed the whole way in, asking God for help."

But with a smile on her face, she recalls that she had a "sense of peace and calmness" despite missing her left arm and losing more than half her blood because she was "able to turn to Jesus during this crazy moment in my life."

"I think that is the one thing that just kept me alive," Hamilton states.

Dr. Jason Shockley writes ... God wants to help you!

Everyone has hardships. Those whom choose to believe in nothing beyond their own understanding have pain, suffering, and confusion. The same is true for those whom choose to believe ... all believers, Christian, Hindu, Buddhist ... all face pain, suffering, and confusion, at certain points in life. In this unfortunate reality, we can all find common ground: that all peoples of the Earth are acquainted with pain.

However, the good news is that no matter who you are, what you've done, what you're facing, or what you've been told, that there IS a God, one true, amazing, almighty God far beyond our human comprehension that says He wants to help.

So, what is your pain? Do you have problems with your family? Are you scared of what the future bodes? Are you bombarded daily with financial obligations you simply cannot meet? Are you facing physical or mental battles with your health that you see no cure for? You have emptiness in you, a longing for something more than just existing. Maybe you can't even find the words to describe your problem; you just know it's far beyond your ability to deal with it. Maybe, you just want someone to care, someone to listen to YOU for a change?

God said He would listen. (Philippians 4:6) God said He does care. (Jeremiah 29:11). God said He could and WOULD help (Matthew 11:28-30, Luke 11:9). So, do you want happiness? Jesus wants to make you happy (John 16:24). Are you afraid of going hungry? Jesus said He would feed you. Have you realized that you are guilty of sin ... Jesus said, just ask Him, and He would forgive you, and that He wants you to be in Heaven. Are you facing an illness and the doctors have no answer? Jesus said, He would heal you (Luke 7:21)

It is so great to know that our God cares! God said that He would do all of these things, all He asks for in return is: Faith and Obedience. God is not a Staple's "Easy Button"; you can't just come to Him say "I want this!" and expect God to give it. God knows what is truly best for us. Sometimes God knows its best NOT to give us certain things (2 Corinthians 12:6-9). The world would no doubt be in total disarray if everyone that asked God to win the lottery got what they prayed for. We are to pray that God's WILL be done NOT our will (Luke 22:42). So don't think that God doesn't like you if He doesn't give you what you asked for when you asked for it. Maybe, it's because God wants what's best for you.

What about the child that gets everything its heart desires and never hears the word "no"? Does he/she not grow up to be an adult with no idea how to function in a society that requires it to do work for itself? The same for us, God never said He would spoon feed us, He said He would HELP us (Psalm 28:7).

God ALWAYS knows what is best, if you just TRUST in Him, He will take care of you (Isaiah 40:31). So, to close: God WANTS to help you - you need simply believe, and ask, and trust Him.

Remember always: Jesus loves us all!
